tricky words I always see misspelled in fics: a guide

    • Viscous/vicious – Viscous is generally used to describe the consistency of blood or other thick liquids. Vicious is used to describe something or someone who is violent.
    • Piqued/Peaked/Peeked – To pique someone’s interest is to catch or tease their attention. When something peaks, it reaches its total height or intensity. To peek (at) something is to look briefly, or glance.
    • Discrete/Discreet – this is a tough one. Discrete means to be separate, or distinct, i.e., two discrete theories. Conversely, when someone is discreet, they are being secretive or cautious to avoid attention.
    • Segue/Segway – one is a transition between things, the other is a thing you can ride at the park and definitely fall off of.
    • Conscious/Conscience/Conscientious – to be conscious is to be awake, i.e., not unconscious, or to be aware of something. Your conscience is the little voice in your head telling you not to eat the entire pint of ice cream. Finally, to be conscientious is to be good, to do things thoroughly, to be ruled by an inner moral code.

Hope this helped! Please add more if you think of them!

Counsel/Council - counsel is advice, the advice giver, or the verb form of giving said advice. Council is the group of people who come together to discuss and/or make decisions.

Desert/Desert/Dessert - desert is a barren landscape where little precipitation occurs. desert - abandon (a person, cause, or organization) in a way considered disloyal or treacherous. dessert - a usually sweet course or dish (as of pastry or ice cream) usually served at the end of a meal.

OH MY TIME IS HERE! I HAVE MADE A POST I KEEP FOR THIS EXACTLY

Taunt/Taut - Taunt is a jeer or provocation, taut means to be pulled tight, or not slack

Weary/Wary - weary means tired and wary means cautious

Rogue/Rouge - rogue is a person who has unaffiliated themselves from what they were before (is the general understanding); a person or thing that behaves in an aberrant, faulty, or unpredictable way - rouge is red

Wonton/Wanton - a wonton is a dumpling, wanton is (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked and/or sexually unrestrained

Haphazard/Halfhazard - haphazard means to  have a lack of plan, order, or direction - the other isn’t a word

Corporal/Corporeal - corporal is a lack of plan, order, or direction and corporeal is to have a physical existence: to be tangible: of a person’s body

Peck/Pec - the first is a kiss (peck) and the second is the shortened version of pectoral (pec)

Virile/Viral - to be virile is to have strength, energy, and a strong sex drive (typically said about men) and then this last year (2020) has personally taught us, is how viral a plague can really be, so of the nature of, caused by, or relating to a virus or viruses

Vulnerable/Venerable - vulnerable means being susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm, and if a person is venerable they’re accorded a great deal of respect, especially because of age, wisdom, or character (or if you’re religious, holy)

Dyed is something that is colored, and died is deceased

Chalk (it up to something) ; chock (-full of something); choked (to cutoff air).

to affect is the action, the effect is the end result

If something doesn’t bother you then you weren’t fazed by it. If you are between two states of being that is a phase.

Please. For the love of all things holy. I beg you.

    Loose: the opposite of tight

Lose: to misplace something or the opposite of win.

    I BEG YOU.

breath is the noun, breathe is the verb

I wrote a whole list of these years ago, but the same misspellings persist, unfortunately.

    • Advice/Advise - in American English advice is a noun, you can give it to people, and advise is a verb, the act of giving advice
    • Ball/Bawl - people ball their fists when they are angry and ready to fight; people bawl when they cry loudly like a baby
    • Bear/Bare - to bear is to carry something physical or figurative like “to bear arms” or “to bear good news;” bare is when something is hairless, naked, or exposed as in the expression “baring your soul”
    • Hanger/Hangar - clothes go on a hanger in a closet or on a rack; airplanes go in a hangar to keep them safe
    • Definite/Defiant - when something is a sure thing it is definite; when someone acts out against authority they are defiant
    • Pour/Pore - you pour drinks or pour out your feelings, but your pores are the tiny holes in your skin that keep it healthy
    • Palate/Palette/Pallet - palate is the surface of your tongue that allows you to taste (e.g. palatable means “is enjoyable to eat”); a palette is a set of color options for paint or makeup; a pallet is a wooden platform heavy shipments are placed on so forklifts can move them around, or a pallet is a mattress stuffed with straw

One more example that I don’t see misspelled, but do see misused:

    • Soiled - primarily used to describe clothing or fabric that has been made very dirty with something gross and wet (feces, mud, vomit, food, etc.). It is not just a synonym for “dirty,” it is very specific. If your female character has “soiled panties,” she is not sexy she just pooped her pants.
    • Sodden - a close synonym to “soaked,” except it normally has a negative meaning whereas soaked is neutral. You use sodden for objects that have been made soggy or ruined by too much liquid. It is not often used for buildings, cars, or other normally solid objects. Unless the building is made of straw or the car has a fabric interior and was flooded, neither will be described as sodden.

This is partly why I stress that people READ more books if they want to be taken seriously as published authors. You make a lot more mistakes if you don’t know what your language should look like in print!

The flip side of “cleanse diets don’t do anything” is that if you tried a cleanse diet and you did experience a notable reduction in fatigue, joint pain, and general blarginess, you need to talk to an allergy specialist, because there’s nearly a 100% chance that means you have an undiagnosed allergy to some component of your customary diet.

This is an excellent point and I’d imagine there’s a lot of quack diets that continue circulating and getting press based on this exact principle.

Absolutely – a great many diets of the “stop eating everything except these three foods” variety are 100% trading on the fact that they’re practically guaranteed to generate some positive testimonials by virtue of coincidentally cutting somebody’s undiagnosed food allergy out of their diet.

Cleanse diets are a fad, elimination diets are a diagnostic tool, and they often overlap in the foods you’re told to stop eating.

    Go see an allergist!!!

I went ahead and signed up for the “ad-free browsing” Tumblr now offers and I’m happy to know others are too, and I want to say that I’ve seen a lot of people angry that Tumblr is trying to get people to “pay” to get rid of ads and like okay, yeah. Paying the amount gets rid of the ads, and Tumblr’s intent here is to have you pay them money and they will not show you the ads that would be making them the money you’re now paying them, because that’s how ads on websites work, and have always worked. the money has to come from somewhere, and if it’s not ads, it’s users. or both.

    but also like.

I’ve never had the ability to just give Tumblr money. It’s never been an option available to me.

I can’t really speak for anyone else, but I do often have some spare money, and I often use that money to donate to things that I like that have made my life more bearable. I set aside money each year for my monthly donations to AO3. I donate to wikipedia when they ask. I “buy gems” on flight rising at least once a year. Stuff like that. And even the last one, I do that once a year not because I want the gems (it’s nice to get them) but because I use the site often and it improves my life and I want it to keep running. I donate to things I am able to use for free because they mean something to me. Because I want them to stay, and I understand that it’s not their fault it takes money to run things.

I’ve never had that option here. I’ve never been able to donate directly to Tumblr to say “here’s $20 to keep the lights on, thanks for giving me a place to call home.” I’ve never been able to speak to Tumblr with my money.

And yes, it’s a hellsite (affectionate and derogatory) and yes they do things that drive me up a wall sometimes, and they’re not even close to perfect. They fuck up plenty.

But… it’s ours. This space is mine, it’s where my friends are, it’s where I come to unwind, it is full of some of the most amazing folks I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with. It contains so much fandom history at this point. And it’s not tracking us and it’s not making us use real names and there’s no viewing someone’s follower count, no one gets merit for anything, posts blowing up is chaotic at best. There is no other site like that, not really, and certainly not one so easy to use that’s already so full of people. Tumblr is one of the last bastions of wilderness on the internet, and I spend literal hours on here making stuff and talking to people and looking at stuff other people made.

And regardless of what Tumblr is or isn’t, what they have done or not done or fucked up… Tumblr isn’t just @staff. Tumblr, for me, is all of you, shitposting and meme posting and passionately science-ing and informing everyone about current events and showing off pictures of animals that make my day a little brighter. And without Tumblr as the platform to do all of this on, I would have to go someplace worse. Like Twitter. I don’t want to go to Twitter.

So… in my eyes, I’m not paying $40 to get rid of ads. I mean, yeah okay that’s happening as well, and it’s a nice bonus, but it’s not why I’m doing it, because I already get rid of ads for free.

But I AM giving Tumblr a $40 donation as a thank you for 10+ years of free service, the friends I have made along the way, the experiences I’ve earned here, the people I get to interact with, the sometimes functional website, the thousands of my posts they archive and host, and in the hopes it will stick around to continue to do all of that and more.

It doesn’t have to be worth it to you, but it’s worth it to me.

one of the most amazing things that has been said to me in therapy is that self esteem doesn’t exist.

and that floored people and the psych went onto say that what she meant was that self esteem is a concept that actually includes a vast array of things and labelling them all as one thing is really limiting and prevents actual improvement

you could have real strong pride in the things you create and hate your body

you could hate your creations but also want to share them with people

you could not hate yourself at all but not take care of yourself, engage in reckless self endangerment

thats all bundled under ‘self esteem’ but saying ‘i need better self esteem’ doesn’t mean anything

whereas if you say ‘i need to work on ways to keeping myself safe, refusing to act on destructive urges’ or ‘i want to be in a place where i believe compliments trusted people give me’

    thats concrete, thats a goal.

having it said in therapy helped a lot of people in my group stop saying ‘i have low self esteem’ and start specifying about the actual issue they have

Wow, that is so, so helpful.

all articles about tumblr’s “decline” boil down to 2 things: you can’t get famous on here and you can’t make money on here. And they don’t get that that’s why we like it here.

you can, however, get infamous, which is twice as good
